An estimated 30 million bison once roamed
North America but by the 1900s, were driven to
near extinction by European settlers. Protective
measures, several individuals, groups and in
particular, Indigenous tribes, helped foster the
revival of the American buffalo. In Texas, Molly
Goodnight with her husband Charles
Goodnight, who were ranchers and cattle
owners, helped prevent the extermination of the
Southern Bison herd.
